2424/424 Tach Connection

Trying to see if I can get the tach to work on this. Bought a new cable, but nothing turns. So I am thinking something is not right on the distributor end.
How does this piece come out? I tried prying on it and the edges were starting to chip off. Is it just pressed in? What will I find inside there if I get it out?

I have found that some of the British built tractors need a longer inside cable to reach into the square on the engine end. If I remember correctly about 1/2 inch longer. I have bought a universal cable replacement kit and made one to fit properly.

Randy, What you are going to find in there is a little geared shaft that runs off of the distributor drive shaft to run the tach. The part that connects to the tach cable has a square opening to accept the tach drive cable square male end. To remove that threaded piece the tach cable attaches to I'm think a tool made up with threads to screw onto the part with a heavy item like a small slide hammer to pop it loose as the same part on my Farmall 240 doesn't want to come off. I think it is just a dis-similar metal thing between the two parts which appear to be different metals and probably has some electrolysis taking place which has corroded them together to some degree. I haven't fussed with mine enough yet to see how a little slide hammer type tool would fit in there but other then that don't really know how to get it off without taking that cast drive housing off the tractor along with the distributor. I have all new parts in that area for my tractor and in a perfect world they go together and come apart very easily. Good luck and share a solution if you develop one, Hal.

Thanks Phil & Hal. The longer cable might be the trick, need to get a buddy to help turn over the tractor with the wheels and see if the gear moves. I poked in the longer end of the cable and it seemed to go into a slot.
I will keep soaking it Hal and maybe try some kind of puller if it is not a cable problem.
I think the gear itself is around $75, yikes!
