any tricks to free stuck engine????

A lot depends on why it is stuck and if it is diesel or gas. If the exhaust has been open and the cylinders got water in them not likely to ever free up. But if it is from sitting a long time filling the cylinders with ATF and then if it has an up right exhaust pour ATF in it till it starts to leak out some place. Be sure to put the plugs back in so as to keep dirt etc out. Then after say a week set a 12 volt battery in it and use short fast taps on the starter button. Watch the crank pulley when you do that for any movement. If you see it move at all keep trying. Be sure the plugs are out when you do that. By the way the starter does not produce enough torque to hurt parts other then the push rods

If its a gas engine look down in the cylinders with a bore scope light. If there's a lot of rust you probably need to pull the head and oil pan and tear the engine down. If the engine has wet sleeves you may be able to drive the sleeve and pistons out. If there's no sleeves your local auto machine shop may be able to press them out. Hal

Just got a AC C unstuck today. Been soaking for 2 or 3 weeks. I took the head off, cleaned out the water, Used red ScotchBrite to clean up the cylinders and put about a 3/16 deep amount of LiquidWrench in the holes. Put it in third gear and rocked it a couple times a day. Today I took a .004 feeler gauge and ran it around the piston tops. Pulled the starter and got on the flywheel with a crowbar and got it to move. Be sure to check for stuck valves also. Good luck and don't try to rush it. Mike

Forgot to add that water ran out of the intake/exhaust manifold when I started to pull it off for a repair on the mount lugs. Mike

Tractor was sitting in a shed probably close to 20 yrs. So I am hoping it is just stuck from sitting.

Ok is that is the case ATF will most likely free it up. Most of the tractors I have or had I got with locked up engines and most freed up with a ATF treatment as in more then 20 freed up to the 2 or 3 that did not free up

I would take the head so you see what you dealing with I bought a chalmers b the pistons and liners were all rust that one sat in the weather then I got a super c that was under a car port was stuck but the liners were still glossy that one freed right up

does this atf method free up the rings? the reason I ask is because of the four engines that I have had to beat the piston out of with a sledge hammer the rings were rusted so tight in there groves that they had to be chipped out with a small chisel?

remove spark plugs. blow out cylinders with compressed air. oil floats on water. blow out cylinders again. add penetrant. wait. add penetrant. wait. about a week try to turn engine over. rock it forwards and backwards. good luck.

Ive had pretty fair luck taking the rocker arms off, finding one piston on its way up and one on its way down and hooking hyd. hoses to those two cyls. and hooking my 1066 on to them. when you see the fan start to turn rock it back and forth with the hyd, lever. I also blew a head gasket out once!

Remove the plugs and look in and you can see the cycl walls and if they are rusty remove the head then you can see what the next move would be. If they are rusty aint nothing going to fix it.

The only method that's 100% effective and quick is to pull the head and actually see what you're up against.

Soaking can take weeks or months or years or never. There are dozens of magic potions using things like ATF, acetone, penetrating oil, coca-cola, and baby seal's tears. They all work, and they all don't work.

Kroil worked for me. Had a 70 MGB that sat for 10 yrs couldn t budge it even with a 3/4 in drive on the crank. put about 1/4 inch of kroil in cylinders let set for 3 days, broke loose, put pb blaster and wd40 in it and worked back and forth. Runs just fine now, I am sure I got lucky that day. Should of bought lottery tickets.

(quoted from post at 14:25:37 03/06/13) What is a good way to free a stuck motor? What to put in
cylinders?

Tear it apart. Even if you get it to turn, the rings will be stuck. Save yourself a lot of frustration.

Just take the head off. These are simple engines to repair, sometimes not so simple to replace. Dont be lazy, pull the head.

Yes ATF frees up the rings if they are not stuck super tight. But if the engine has had water in the cylinders for very long ATF will only maybe free thing up. All depends on why the engine has locked up. If from sitting for year but so that the cylinder did not fill with water ATF works well but if the cylinder had water in them not as likely to work

Here is what I did on my 52 Super C. I bought it for $150. Good rear tires, bad fronts. Engine stuck, but sitting in a barn. No water in cylinders. I pulled the head and put a 50/50 mix of diesel/gasoline in each cylinder, then set it alight. Obviously, I removed the fuel tank beforehand. After doing this twice to each cylinder, rocking the tractor showed that the fan was spinning over. From there, it did not take much to get her back together and running. She still has other problems, but she runs. Also, I was able to reuse the old head gasket.

The heat and different coefficient of expansion between aluminum (piston) and iron (sleeve) works to break the bond between the two.

Now, if the cylinder had water sitting in it, it may be another story. You may get the piston to move down, but probably not up over the rust. In that case, the sleeve will have to be replaced.

well mechanic's would tear it down and go from there. non mechanic's believe in miracle cures which dont work. soak all you want but it will never clean the cyl's of rust and corrosion nor will it loosen the seized rings in their grooves. also any loosened engine will "run" but its like an old woman with lots of make up.
