Please correct me if I am wrong. But does'nt detergent keep the "dirty" stuff in suspension so it can either be trapped by the oil filter(if it has one) or settle in the bottom of the pan. If you had no to very little sludge in the pan. Then I say use modern day dtergent additive oil and keep that engine clean. As the previous owner obviously did. just my .02 worth gobble
