Farmall 706 flames out muffler

I was snow blowing and when I would go through a drift and RPM would go lower, flames would start to come out of the muffler. Otherwise seemed to run fine. Any suggestions on where to start looking to fix?

I'm ssuming your 706 is a gasser. Is so and if the engine otherwise runs fine, a bit of flame out of the exhaust under heavy load is normal. It's there all the time but may only be noticeable in low light.

FWIW our Oliver 1850 would shoot a yellow-tinged blue flame a good foot or more out the muffler when plowing. The muffler would become cherry red; the manifold a reddish-orange. The tractor plowed many thousands of acres like this.

presuming its a gas, might want to check the timing for starters.under a heavy load it normal to have some flame.

You may need to open the open the main jet screw near the bottom of the carburetor as your engine may be running a little lean when under heavy load. Hal

check the advance in the distributor too, it may be stuck. pull the cap off the distributor, give the rotor a flip one way then the other, it should move some and then snap back in place. if not, it may be rusted up.

If you were operating the tractor in low light conditions such as in the evening or at night, then the flames out of the stack are perfectly normal. Nothing to fix.

Yes it is a gas and it was at night. I cannot believe that this would be the first time I noticed it in 20 years of using the machine, but I have been known to do worse when concentrating on the job at hand. Nice blue flame came out about 6 inches. I just checked the timeing, but will double check and will look into all suggestions. Thanks folks.

If a 706 starts hard, runs rough until it warms up, and flames out the stack when lugging at 2150 rpm then she's tuned about right. If it grinds when it shifts the clutch is properly adjusted :)

how do you think we used to light a cigarette when we were plowing -- to windy for a match - coudnt aford a zippo--we had a stick for a fuel guage and it doubled as a lighter with a paper clip on the other end --- dont tell dad or mom ---LOL
