300 quieter muffler

I have a Stanley muffler currently on the 300, the kind that you can
see right through. It is very loud compared to my H I used to have
and I would like to quiet it down if I can. I am wondering if I could
put a muffler on it that would be quieter and still reasonably cheap
and whether a more restrictive muffler would cause running
problems. I do not care whether it looks original or not. I do wear
sound reducing earmuffs. Any advice will be much appreciated.

I took a peice of tubing and welded the one shut then drilled holes in the sides to equal the outlet dia and sure did make it quieter tube was long enough to reach way down in the body . Mite try it just for fun. You could get a piece at a muffler shop.

Your H probably had a muffler with the 14 1/2" length shell. I believe the extra long shell muffler is the one with the baffle inside so that you cannot see straight through it. Part number 350600R1. About $30.

Zach - I've had excellent luck with the mufflers from Carter and Gruenenwald. They are MUCH quieter than the Stanleys and not any more restrictive. They also seem to last longer.

If you truly don't care about looks, a muffler from a large luxury car is even quieter. I salvaged one salvaged from a 70's Buick Wildcat and used it on my Super M for a while. It silenced the exhaust so well it was almost eerie. Could now hear all manner of OTHER sounds - valve clatter, the timing gear train, parts spinning in the transmission, etc.

What David said--Carter and Gruewald and Steiner now have the mufflers that Ken Updike had manufactured. They are manufactured to exact OEM specs to both sound and design. They are straight through but should have a quieter sound than yours. I say should because they can be heard. Exact sound I remember from the 50's.
