How does one do this? Does the cable go + to - between the jumper and jumpee? |

| | Heres a summary: ALWAYS Pos to Pos Neg to Neg when jumping or charging, it dont matter which battery post happens to be tied to some huge hunk of iron as far as + to + and - to - rule is concerned... NEVER jump a 12 volt battery direct to a 6, Ive seen them blow up NEVER make a jump connections last connection near the battery especially around its top where explosive gasses can be present, I usually make the last connection on a good clean heavy frame member AWAY from the battery If youre using a Neg ground vehicle to jump a Pos ground tractor (still use rule above) dont let the vehicles make contact. Be safe, 12 vollts really makes her spin John T |

| Positive to positive and negative to negative is exactly right. If you connect positive to negative (batteries in series) you will set up a 12 Volt system with two 6 Volt batteries. If you make the grievous mistake of connecting a 12 Volt battery to a 6 Volt battery nothing will work out. In series, you will create an 18 Volt system. In parallel, you may well cause an explosion in the 6 Volt battery. If you have a 12 Volt tractor, which uses two 6 Volt batteries, you can start your 6 Volt machine by connecting up to ONE of the batteries on the 12 Volt tractor. No harm will result. Remember, when jump starting, always connect in Parallel! Either vehicle can be negative or positive to ground and it won't make any difference to the jump starting procedure. I have jump started a VW Beetle with the Farmall M.

| And to add scary stuff to this I had a 12 v batry explode on me once . Inside a Checy 1/2 ton, but it rocked the truck from side to side, thought I"d been shot with a 12 gage. (I"d just shut the truck off, and got back inside to re-start it.} I can"t imagine being on top of one as it blows. |

| Always hook + to + and - to - unless your jump starting a 6 volt system with 12 volts and then you should NEVER hook a 12 volt battery to the 6 volt one or it could be the last thing you ever see because the 6 volt battery can/will blow up in your face. Plus if the 6 volt battery is so low it will not spin the engine over good chance it will not have enough to run it either. If you still want to do it hook the ground side as in + or - the same and then the other side right to the starter. But check and double check that it is out of gear |

| If you are doing it with 12 volts, and the tractor has a starter terminal that is accessible between the starter switch and the starter motor, just turn on the key and firmly touch the jumper to that conductor. (polarity doesn't even matter, as you are just spinning the starter and the starter motor always spins in the correct direction.) This eliminates issues with exploding batteries because the tractor battery and system are not involved. Ground the other jumper near the starter motor. (this will not work with ""booster Cables"" they are too small to operate any starter motor and can only be used to charge a like voltage battery for 15 minutes with the other vehicle. Good jumpers will have #2 wire in them. Jim |

| Jim, Only problem with that is that sparks are too close to the gas tank and sediment bowl for me. I would rather attach the positive first, then the ground somewhere else. Usually I revert to cranking, in spite of all the broken arms I have read about on this forum. |
