404 resistor wire

Changed the coil on my 404 utility to one with a internal resistor, and was wandering what to do with the wire that ran from starter solenoid to old external resistor.Thanks.

If you have a true 12 volt coil now you don't need that wire coming from starter solenoid to external resistor. By the way, you just eleminated one of the best starting aids a 12 volt system has.

You can eliminate the resistor wire and it should work fine.

The resistor wire was used originally so a 6 volt coil could be used on a 12 volt tractor (it dropped primary voltage to the coil to 6 volts). However when the starter was engaged the resistor wire was bypassed so the coil received full battery voltage during cranking. This gives a hotter spark while cranking and thus more reliable starting - especially as plugs, points, etc became worn.

Just keep your 404 in good tune and you should have no starting problems.

So that I am consistent, (and for best information distribution) coils do not have internal resistors. They have more and finer primary windings, resulting in the ability to operate on 14.4 volts or so when the engine is running. No external resistor required does not mean it has an internal resistor. No elephants outside, is not equal to elephants are inside! Said with a big smile! Jim

For better starting under all conditions, leave the starting bypass wire right where it is and install a coil that USES an external resistor!
