Carb flare fitting connection leak

Having problems obtaining a leak free connection with my new gas line on my Farmall M at the inlet of the carb. I heard string might work, not sure what kind of string? Any ideas will be much appreciated

Wrap teflon tape not only aroun the threads but a little around the line and back side of the flare fitting where the nut will sit.

Teflon tape is for tapered pipe fittings. Flared fittings need a good flare and seat to seal. Like was said before reflare the tube and be sure the seat of the connecting fitting is not damaged.

I agree with Alan, pipe dope is not a fix. The flare should seal it, but the dope can lubricate the threads allowing a tighter connection.

A lot of these type seals are a line-type seal; one side of the joint is actually a cone, the other is shaped like a sphere. The mating of a cone and a sphere is a line, going around in a circle, and the tighter you tighten up the nut, the more presure you put to compress that line. If you look, you might have that sort of fitting. It can be as simple as extremely fine cleaning of the cone part and the sphere part, and maybe a just a LITTLE bit of gasoline-resist TFE sealer.

Teflon tape needs to be used evry careful as little pieses seem to get into the carb. I use the correct fittings and teflon paste on the threads careful and no problems as they say the flare does the sealing.

You say new gas line. Is it original style. If it is you need the style fitting with the ferrele attached to nut. You slip nut on line, push line as far into fitting as it will go , then tighten nut. That breaks the ferrele off nut and seals it up. If not original I have no idea what set up you have as people put on anything they can find in a hard ware store. The original style fitting with screen attached that goes into carburetor accepts the nut I described.

I go along with Pete 23 that it should be a ferrele and not flared. I have 6 Farmall IH tractors and they all use ferreles. The only way I have had a new line leak is if the line is not perfectily round or if it has a scratch on out side of new line.

Best to use the ferrule fittings. Teflon tape is OK to get you out of trouble when working on the weekend or when spares are not in stock. I replaced the fuel lines on my Farmall A, H and M tractors with the original type and had no trouble. You do need to be absolutely certain there is NO grit or dirt of any kind in the threads or on the ferrule and seat/cone. You should definitely be sure that the brass nut with the screen filter in it is fitted. We sometimes use our Farmalls to drive a chaff cutter and the last thing you want is leaking fuel! Can lead to disaster.

the string repair you mentioned will get you out of a bind if the flare is not seating tight enough ,just slide the nut back far enough to allow you to wrap 4 or 5 rounds of thread or small string in the same direction as the nut tightens between the flare and the nut, this acts as a shim, not the best way but will work until it can be re-flared ,doesn't work on cracked or bad flares
