Bearing torque differences

I have found 2 numbers for my SM main bearing torque. There is no IH service manual for the SM that I am aware of. There is a 4 cyl gas engine manual (ISS 1039-1) that covers most of the gas engines, mostly oriented to power units if that makes a difference. Anyway that manual gives a torque value of 67 ft lbs, the M service manual and the I&T manual both give 100 ft lbs. What is the correct value? There is a difference in the crankshafts. M up to sn 278050 has a main journal of 2.74xx diameter according to the I&T manual. I&T manual and the ISS 1039-1 manuals give a diameter of 2.80xx for later serials and the C264 up. I am guessing that the 100 ft lb for all is correct but I am not sure. Any help appreciated. Also the cap has thick washers for the bolts, one of them broke. Do I have to use the thick washer or can I simply stack plain washers to get that thickness?

I think the 100Ft/# is correct, but not sure. I would use a correct heavy washer, they are made from harder steel than standard hardware washers. I fear that soft washers would fail to hold correct tension. Jim

CNKS, looked at GSS-1170 264 engine. It says 100. Later engines like a C-281 used a thin hard washer about like a grade 8 SAE one. Can't remember for sure but the OD of the SAE washer may be to big without trimming one edge for a SM.
If so that maybe why the thicker washer was used to make up for strength lost due to a smaller OD. If the SAE washer will work you would need to make sure the bolt doesn't bottom out. Don't know if 2 grade 8 washers stacked would be asking for trouble or not.
Think you can get X heavy hard washers somewhere.
If it takes a original washer I could probably look through my junk and find one. Always saved stuff like that when a block was junk.

Thanks, I thought it should be 100, 67 sounds to light to me. It was just a misprint, but could get someone in trouble. I'm going to look around for some thick washers, probably should replace all of them. The broken one was when I set the torque to 67.

Jim, you are probably right, maybe I can find some grade 8 washers. Also I have Fastenals catalog, have to pick up some plugs from them anyway.
