Hello, Im going to be helping a buddy of mine get his grandpas Old farmall M running again. I am a Oliver guy myself and have never messed with Farmalls before. The tractor ran when it was parked XX amount of years ago. Just wondering if there is anything to do right off the bat to check that would help us in the process of getting this old girl going again. Any help would be great. Thanks

My self, I'd say the key is dose the motor turn over, just like with an Oliver. After that, I'd say its the normal check of fluids, possibly a carb clean up, and such. Some may put something in to try to help the rings, but I'd say that's a personal choice.

Thanks...yea i was told that the motor does turn. Thats what i was going to start out with. Check fluids, new battery, check for spark, drain old gas and put in new... Just didnt know if there were anythings that are known to go bad over time. besides possibly everything haha

I would check under the valve cover for corrosion and gunk buildup from condensation also to check for proper oil flow to the valves. Working on that myself with a new to me tractor.

Joe - Do like Bill suggests: Remove the rocker box and check for stuck valves, disengaged pushrods, etc. It'll also be a good time to check/adjust the valve clearances.

Before starting the first time, pour a quart of oil over the rockers. Also remove the plugs squirt a few pumps from a squirt oiler (a tablespoon or two) into each cylinder. Then before replacing the plugs crank the engine until pressure just begins to show on the gage. This will insure all the internal parts are oiled before your first startup attempt.

Good luck!

My "H" sat for 15 years, and I did all that, but she turned over real S--L--O--W. Finally removed the battery ground wire, from the frame, ran it directly over TO the starter bolt, bypassing all the various frame joints and corrosion, and she reeally spun then!!

I bought an H that had set for many years and the points were rusted together. It had old gas but it started right up when I put in a new battery.
