706 international gas

I used my 706 gas to put hay out then turned it off and didnt seem to have any problems. A few days later I tried to start and it turned about a half crank and starter stopped.tried a few more times starter engages but wont turn over. I then took timing cover off and couldnt get flywheel to advance so i cranked it backwards almost one revolution and it wouldnt travel any more.then I tried ignition again and tractor cranked fine to previous stuck position.can anyone help with this?

Might pull the valve cover and check for a stuck valve.

Take your spark plugs out to check for hydraulic lock of anti freeze or gasoline and go from there.

As Pete indicates. Probably a hydraulic lock (fluid in the combustion chamber, could be gasoline, or coolant, or water down the muffler.
In all cases find out what it is before cranking it with the plugs in. If a piece of metal from ? gets on top of a piston, it will destroy the engine if cranked (especially if pull started. Were it mine I would look in each cylinder with a bore scope if there is no fluid in the cylinders. I also would make sure to assess the type of liquid in the chamber when getting it to turn over. Insight there is important. If it is frozen, water. (probably the best thing to find) you may need to heat that cylinder with a propane torch till it melts out.
Bent rods broken piston rings and bent valves can be easily manufactured by an engine close to TDC being forced over the top. Jim

pull all your plugs out and have someone roll the motor over by HAND while you look in the cylinders with a flashlight

Getting metal on top of a piston doesn't happen too often, but it can. Dad had a brass screw come loose from someplace in the carb on an H,and got sucked up in engine. Fortunately it was small and didn't do major damage. Sure made a loud hammering sound for a small object. He got it out through the spark plug hole. Piston was beat up, but no other damage.

thanks again to all suggestions found frozen water in center cylinder just under exhaust thawing now ill let you all know how it turns out.

That's not good. Did you leave the tractor sitting outside without a cover over the muffler?

has a flapper on top of muffler but i'llcover with something else from now on.

I've seen those flappers stand straight up in a stiff wind.

Well I used a small propane torch through spark plug hole till I got all the ice melted then used a small section of clear rubber hose to siphon about 12 to 16 oz. of water, then turned flywheel til I was satisfied all ice and water was out,replaced timing gear cover and she started right up. I avoided a disaster this time. Thanks again for everyones insight!!!

I have a piston pin from a 1086 that I keep for a souvenir. The tractor stood out in a severe rain storm, guy hit the starter and bang. Busted that pin right in half. Didn't hurt the head but sure raised heck with piston, sleeve and rod. It ran for several years after that with no apparent problem.
