distilet fuel

Distillate has not been produced for a LONG time. What you smell is likely old kerosene, still available--IH made engines for both.

Could also be old gas.

Gas sitting in a partially filled tank gradually degrades into what is essentially a foul-smelling distillate. If the fuel is more than a year or so old, that's probably what you've got - along with gum, rust, etc on the bottom of the tank.

this tractor is 1940--does not apear to have been used that much--could be orig paint --all pedals are tight ( no wobble)--motor & chassie# match--distilet man with lift capibilites -- no belly pump -factory delete -cork driven in to the hyd holes--pretty sure it wasnt gas or ker --never smelled anything like it--i own 40 ih tractors

I had a similar experience with a WR9 last fall. Tractor had starting tank, manifold heat shield, shutters w/ complete linkage, etc. Hadn't run in no telling when. After all new belts, hoses, tune up when I drained the big tank the few gallons in it had no smell I could detect. Now I know what old gas smells like. And no deposits in tank either as is common with old gas. Put fresh gas in a she fired right up, ran good. As unlikely as it seems I gotta wonder if what ran out of this tractor was distillate too.

tobaccoman---the tank is clean --the carb looked like it had been cleaned yesterday-but had not been apart----started right up on gas----guess what i realy wanted to know is how many years this has set and not run--[it doesn" look like it has been used much

Roger, to answer your original question, my best guess is that distillate disappeared no later than the late 1950s. I don't know for sure; I came along too late to use distillate fuel. My reasoning is based on the last IH tractors produced setup at the factory to use distillate was the 350-450 series in 1957-58 era. My fuel tank was clean also and the carb wasn't too bad either. The tractor also had the oldest style of Champion W14 spark plugs I have ever seen. When it ran last nobody knows.

thanks everyone for your input!!!i like to think these old tractors have a personality of thier own----i"m going to keep the 40 dist/ker and go from there-----thanks tobaccoman just what i was looking for
