I had a similar experience with a WR9 last fall. Tractor had starting tank, manifold heat shield, shutters w/ complete linkage, etc. Hadn't run in no telling when. After all new belts, hoses, tune up when I drained the big tank the few gallons in it had no smell I could detect. Now I know what old gas smells like. And no deposits in tank either as is common with old gas. Put fresh gas in a she fired right up, ran good. As unlikely as it seems I gotta wonder if what ran out of this tractor was distillate too.

Roger, to answer your original question, my best guess is that distillate disappeared no later than the late 1950s. I don't know for sure; I came along too late to use distillate fuel. My reasoning is based on the last IH tractors produced setup at the factory to use distillate was the 350-450 series in 1957-58 era. My fuel tank was clean also and the carb wasn't too bad either. The tractor also had the oldest style of Champion W14 spark plugs I have ever seen. When it ran last nobody knows.
