on/off switch on M

This may be a really dumb question, but got me thinking last night. On the IH tractors with distributor, when you pull the on off switch to on position it allows current to go to the coil. On the ones with a mag, I would think the on off switch would ground the mag when pushed to in position, unground when out. If this is correct , are there different switches for mag or distributor?

Yup - different switches are used for distributor and magneto ignition.

A distributor switch has two terminals. Its contacts CLOSE when the switch is pulled out and OPEN when it is pushed in.

Mag switch has a single terminal (the other contact is grounded internally). It grounds the magneto when it is pushed in.

The distributor switch can be used as a mag kill switch. That is what my '42 H has on it. You just have to connect the other wire to ground and pull the knob OUT to kill the mag.
