Aftermarket brake shaft, mislabeled or mis-made?

I ordered a brake pedal shaft for the SMD, looked up part number 357046R1 on the CaseIH site, ordered from an aftermarket source by that number, and the package came with that number on the label.

As the photo illustrates, with the right hand ends matched up, the left hand end is all wrong. The keyway is indexed wrong, and is 7/16" farther out. The overall shaft length is 5/16" longer. If we use the right hand keyway as a center line reference, it looks like the left hand keyway is about the right distance off that center, just in the wrong direction.

Does this shaft fit something else, or is it just made wrong?

Contact whoever you ordered it from, It was mispackaged. I got one from OEM Tractor Parts, supposed to be for a 460, it was for a Super H, I think, length was correct, groove for the key was wrong--people do make mistakes.

Either mislabled or mis-made, it isn't correct for the application that it's labeled for.

My dad wanted the same part for his SM, and went to a somewhat local IH only place. They brought out a new A[/size:2bca812ad4]lmost &[/size:2bca812ad4] I[/size:2bca812ad4]ncorrect one sealed in the plastic pakage. The situation was the same you're experiencing. They told him to just have the keyway recut to match the old one. For 20 bucks less than they wanted for the wrong part (not counting what the cost of recutting the misplaced keyway would have cost), he had a machine shop make him a shaft.

The new shaft from would have never allowed the brake linkages to function and/or adjust correctly on dad's tractor without reworking the keyway. I'm pretty sure the length was a little off, too. That shaft probably fits something. It wouldn't work on dad's Stage II Super M.

Find a local machine shop. They can either build yours up and turn it back down, or just make you a new one. They aren't exceptionally hard or any special steel. You probably could get it heat treated if you really wanted to, but the last one survived roughly 60 years.

I had the exact same problem when I ordered one of those for my 400 from A&I a few years ago.(357046R1) Seems to me I checked and discovered that the one labeled for the 400 was actually for the M. Maybe the one labeled for the M is the correct one for the Super M/400?

I ended up having a local machine shop make me a new shaft, cost was the same as what A&I charged for the incorrect shaft.

New one is clocked for a M tractor with band brakes. M is a little longer than the disc brake tractors also.

I had the same problem a few years ago with my SM. After
some investigation, A&I has two variations of this shaft, both
listed for the SM. Convenient the one they have attached to the
correct part number is the wrong one! Call them and get it
exchanged for the correct one or have your old shaft welded up
and turned back down.
