F20 with loader hydraulics question

I have an F20 with a loader with the usual one way hydraulics setup. It works fine, except slow as molasses in the cold weather. Could I speed up the operation by using a larger diameter hose? Not sure on this as the hose fittings would still have to be the same as they are now. Any thoughts??

On a low flow system like those found on a F20 the pump is usually the limiting factor. Larger hoses won't change the output of your pump. The only thing that would change would be the velocity of the oil flowing in the hose. The same amount of oil would still be delivered in the same time

Thanks for reply. I kind of thought that was the case. The loader raises quick enough, it's the gravity return that's slow. I thought maybe a larger diameter hose (and as short as possible) would help.

You do have the original belley pump correct. Use any hy oil and it should work fine but like you said in cold weather its slow. The localion of the pump doesent help with getting the fluid warm 1/2 in hose should be fine.

Yes, depending how small and long the hoses are it might help. Lighter oil might help too. I have an old Farmhand on an H and I have to let it warm up in zero weather.

Where are you located? Do you have a heat houser (wind break) for that tractor? If not make something out of canvas, plywood, or tin to put alongside the engine from the radiator back past the hyd. pump and around the back of the hyd. pump to trap the engine heat and warm up that pump and keep the wind away. If you can continue the wind break all the way to past the seat you would be warm also! I know you can still get new heat housers for the letter series tractors. Armand

It's got NAPA hydrualic oil in it right now. HYtran might be a little thinner? The hose is half in. but has excessive length winding around the frame rail. Wondering if I shortened it (made it straighter) if that would make a difference.

I'm in eastern NY. Not Minnesota, but plenty cold enough. I get your idea..heat would solve the problem. Next time I use it, I'll put my salamander kerosene heater on the pump for a few minutes and see what happens.

There is a certain amount of "friction" to liquid flowing through a hose pipe. But in reality I doubt you'd notice much difference. If I were running a loader like that in extreme cold I would cut the oil with diesel fuel or kerosene. Or try to find some light weight oil. Light mineral oil might be an option. Ask your veterinary.

In the lift gates on our trucks, we switched to Aircraft Hyd oil, temp will not change the viscosity at all. They are gravity down too and at 10deg we would have to pull them down, but they are fine now.
