400 lp cylinder head identification

I picked up two of what I believe are 400 LP tractors. One is serial # 7028 S and has a LP tank from Western Tank Co out of Lubbock, Texas. There is no "C" on the serial tag, but it is the same tank mfgr that my factory 560LP has that does have a "C" in the serial number. The other is serial # 27087 S and has a LP tank from Wendland Tank Co out of San Angelo, Texas. Neither tractor has any emblems on them. Both have power steering that looks correct except the later one has its own power steering pump. Could either one be a factory LP tractor? How can I tell? Also, where do I find the head casting number? Thanks in advance for all your replies!

First 400 with what most call a LP head was serial 28211. Before that the same head casting that was used as the gas tractors. To ID a late 400 or a 450 LP head, look to left and click on parts and pieces. Then put LP head in the search box. Find the picture of a 450 LP head. Look how its made above the intake and exhaust ports. Lot different than the other heads.
Should at least have a letter after the engine serial number if it came LP.

I have a 450 LP with the original head, and as best I can remember, the casting number is under the valve cover, near the middle of the head. The casting number, I think, should be 354586R, for a 450LP, I'm not sure about a factory-LP 400, but I think it's the same. Hugh

Yes that one was used on 450 and part of the 400 LP tractors. Parts books list a engine serial number break for 400 tractors. I posted the tractor serial number above that the engine came in.
After you see how that head is made compared to others, all you need to do is reach up under a hood and feel above the manifold to tell if its the small combustion chamber LP head.

I have two low SN 400 LP's and neither has the "C" on the tag. One is a basket case parts tractor and the other is a very original good runner. In fact it's the only one in my pile that has only one coat of paint (what's left of it). It has the larger diameter tank found on the early ones. Neither one has the special "propane" head as found on the later 400 and 450 LP's.
