I just installed a Pertronix ignition in my Super M and also put on the recommended "Flame Thrower" coil. It is a 12v negative ground. I followed the instructions closely and now the tractor won"t start. Turns over, but won"t fire at all. I hooked on the old coil and the result is the same-no start.

Anyone have any experience with the electronic ignitions? Maybe the igniter module is bad. Is there a way to test the module? Voltage to the coil is very good. Called the help number, but they are closed today, which I thought they probably would be.

I also brought the same setup for the H, cost me $175cdn. Got ign module, wires, coil, all from Pertronix. Plowed snow with the SW6 this week, wasn't plugged in. It fired up like nothing, Im a believer in there product.

I installed a Pertronix ignition in my Farmall H.At first it didnt run either, just started and died ,It ran good with points.I called Pertronix and they told me that i needed High Surpression ignition wires to run with my new coil and pertronix ignition kit. $80 later for new ignition wires and my tractor now starts easy and runs great! just a thought....

Your the 2nd person that I know of that had this same issue. Maybe it would be worth a phone to them & ask whats up with the tape. Good to hear thats its running.

I put a Petronix kit in an Oliver Super 88 once. I did something wrong when I hooked it up and fried the thing. It's been long enough I can't recall what I did wrong. Got another kit and carefully followed the instructions and it fired right up. That tractor has NEVER started or run that well. It's been ten years and that system hasn't failed yet. I would have been thru many sets of points by now. The Olivers always did like to eat points. Another issue is the quality of points now days makes electronic ignition even more appealing.

Your coil is oil filled, my is epoxy, but both are the 3ohm coil that doesnt need the resistor. Thats the right number for ignitor. It is possible that you have a dead module, it can happen. 12.4V @ the coil while is cranking is good. I just went measured the ignitor on the SW6, it reads open between the red & black wires. Im assuming its a Hall effect type ign system. Doesnt do anything till the distributor is turning, the battery is out so I cant try it. I do have a read from the base of the ignitor to the groud/black wire. Pertronix will be able to help you out. 6V & points went out of style with the ark. The day of 12V's to coming to an end, since there is so much load on electrical system. 36v or 42v is the next step.

It's running. It did have white tape over the face of the igniter. They should put something in the instructions about removing it as it looks like it is supposed to be there. Seems to run real smooth. Thanks for the help.

Just went out and checked and I think I have the tape problem. The face of the igniter is white-looks like tape. Re read the instructions and there is no mention of removing tape for the installation though. I'll take another look at it after I get home from work. Maybe it just needs to be removed. May try to call Pertronix over lunch.

Found this info. Sounds like the distributor needs to be turned to get it to fire.

I'll check on the tape over the eye. It seems to me there is a number on the surface of the igniter. Maybe it does have tape on it.

The coil I have is 40501 on the box of the coil. On my ticket/receipt, it says the coil number is 24275 (12v Flame Thrower). On the box of the Pertronix igniter, it says part no. 1442. On the receipt it says 24274.

12.4 volts. It has a brand new battery. Also tried running a wire directly from the battery. The gap seems about right. Just drags slightly. There is no adjustment for the gap on this one.

I double checked the numbers against the web site and they seem to match for a 12v neg ground.

What is the voltage to the coil when you cranking the engine over?

I converted old man's 1953 SW6 over to 12V's this past fall, tractor still plows snow every winter for the past 60yrs. I was so tired of leaking 6v battries, generator not charging, etc. Put on a hitachi 35 amp alternator, rewired the whole tractor, put on 3 led work lights, biggest 12V battery that would fit in stock battery box. Put on whole system from Pertronix, ignitor, coil, wires. Also had local electrial shop go thru the starter, just cause. This engine has never started this well ever! Yes, its had new points over the yrs. Im assuming you have the right kit? Should be part number #1442, SM & SW6 should have the same IH distributor, lays horizontally, same engine. Red wire goes pos + to coil, black wire goes - of coil. Have coil part number 40611? Its a 12V coil, it takes 12V's, no resistor is needed. Could be air gap is too large, between the magnet sleeve & the ignitor. Next I would run couple wires, run a ground wire from the battery right to ground of the coil. Where ignitor is hooked to. If that doesn't work, disconnect red wire of the ignitor, run wire from positive side of battery direct. If engine starts, you have a low voltage issue. I have also heard about tape covering the module`s eye. Don`t give up, when it runs you will be 1 happy guy. Im still amazed how when the engine runs & starts. Been running this system all winter plowing snow, temps have 32F to -25F in western Canada. Runs like a dream, just wish it had a cab.

I never saw the need to change to an electronic ignition. Points are cheaper than the electronic and if the points start getting pitted and the engine runs lousy, a quick file to smooth them out will get you by for awhile, whereas when the electronic ignition module goes bad you are SOL.

I have dealt with the same issue, installed Pertronix according to instructions, no start, by accident found that cranking it over with the choke out, them dropping the starter control it will start every time. Maybe starter draws too much current. Tractor starts, runs and pulls great, so haven"t done any further research.
This is 12 volt system with 6volt starter, so engine rolls over fast with the starter.
Good luck.
