Ok Guys,

I have just taken apart my 49 cub trying to fix the Pto. It will not engauge every time or I should say most of the time. I understand that the handle throws the collar up to the drive gear. But after taking the handle, pin and collar out and meshing them together they mesh like what I would consider great. I get a grinding noise when I attempt to to the Pto in gear. What is up. Does the the shaft inside the transmission gear box come back any more or what?
Check out the pics.

Thanks to all who reply.

When I turn the collar over and install it on the shaft coming out of transmission the teeth are tight and mesh together fine. Could someone had the bearings replaced and not driven back far enough?

On my Cub I had a similar problem that may or may not be your problem. You can many times assume that some previous person mis-assembled things. On mine, someone had installed the transmission input bearing housing backwards, so the PTO splines just barely engaged when I put it in gear. The splines finally failed and the PTO wouldn't work. Best to check a manual and see how all the parts go together. I ended up having to buy a new transmission shaft. Roger
