Have a 1947 Farmall cub that smokes all of the time, whether idle or under load. I am assuming it needs rings replaced. could it be the ethanol blend gasoline causing this, or any other suggestions I could try before tearing engine down? Any suggestions from you pros would be great. Thanks much

You should run a compression test and post the readings. If the readings are low you probably need to rebuild the engine. You should then have those cylinders measured for wear by your local auto machine shop. If its worn too much you may need to have the cylinders bored oversize. They won't bore it unless it needs it. Good time to have crankshaft measured for wear. Buy your new bearings from them. It may also need new valve guides. It the old valves are close to 1/32" replace them. Hal

Take a compression test as previously mentioned. Then squirt some oil in a cylinder and take another compression reading. If compression comes up your rings are bad. If no change in reading your valves are not sealing. Do this oil test procedure one cylinder at a time. Don't squirt oil in all the cylinders the same time.

what color is the smoke if white could be bad head gasket if black could be out of adjustment on the carb and blue smoke your rings are shot also when the rings are stuck you will get alot of blow by

pour half a can of seafoam in the oil and the rest in the gas tank
adjust the valves and then work the cub hard for a while

My 47 smoked blue also. Took it apart and found the rings were stuck and worn out. Pulled the pistons and set them back in the holes from the top and they slid down by them self. Honed the cylinders and installed new rings. Got compresson back and no more smoke with more power. Good luck.
