706 hydraulic filter red flag!

Hey guys, when replacing the hy-tran in my 706 today, I noticed something that raised a flag for me. When I pulled the hydraulic filter, the relief screen was full of tiny metal flakes. I believe it amounted to less than and teaspoon. The filter had not been replaced for some time, and the oil was visibly dirty. The power steering has always wined up until I changed the oil today and fired her back up. What are your thoughts/suggestions on the metal particles I found?

Thanks, Cole

The hyd oil goes through everthing in that tractor, trans, rear end, hyd pump, power steering, a few flakes from this and a few from that over the years. Power steering is the first to act up when the filter plugs.

Any thing on the screen means the fluid was going through the screen bypass valve. This happens when filter is plugged or oil is cold. That is what the screen bypass is for. I would cut old filter open and take a look. It may have a lot or very little steel in it. Trick to finding out what area it is coming from is to drain each compartment into a clean white container. Most of the metal will stay in the immediate area it came from but eventually some will travel into filter.

I have seen Hy-Tran that looked like aluminum paint, it had so much metal in it. I found a way to clean up the oil, it works pretty good. I stick a magnet next to the filter and run it about a month and then change filter and clean the magnet.

Of course metal flakes should always give one cause for concern. What your next action is,iportant. Are these from normal wear? Hours on the oil since last changed? Could it be something that will cause severe damage? Questions that cannot be answered sometimes, just by changing the oil. Is it time to dig deeper? Only you can make that decision. I know that one 806 that I worked on once, that had larger metal flakes in the Hy-Tran. These had come from the sprag clutch on the T/A. The tractor had been run too long, and they scored everything. Farmer had me put it back together, and sold it quick. If you watch, and do proper maintanence, and it sounds like you are, then hopefully something like this can be avoided.
Oil sample is the way to go, to find out where that metal is coming from. Contact your Cenex petrolium dealer/rep, and he can get you a sample bottle to send in. $17.00 test......Well worth the money.
