Soon to be new to me Farmall 400 (pics)

Hey guys! Well the deal on the 656 didnt work out so my dad and I went to look at that 400 yesterday. Anyway it is in really good shape, needs a few little things like any tractor, but overall not bad. Has bee sitting outside and it fired right up yesterday when it was -4 degrees out! :) Has 1600hrs on rebuild w/450 kit, Schwartz wide front, Charlynn power steering, Worksaver dual-cylinder 3pt, 70% rear tires, 12V w/alternator and all/lights gauges work. T/A holds about 80% of the time...hoping with new fluid and checking the adjustments it will hold on for a few more years but Im not scared of replacing it if need be. Will have brand new rear rims/tubes before I take delivery


One thing I thought was interesting was how short the PTO handle is. It does not look to have been cut down and rewelded but I dont remember that handle being soo short on my other 400.


Trading my 1942 H (complete dual fuel) and 1953 Farmall SH (mechanically restored, M&W live hydraulics) straight across for it.

It looks nice. I wonder if the PTO lever could be off a utility tractor. I do not know for sure but I would think they would be shorter since the whole tractor is lower to the ground. I have a spare long one off a 300 it you are interested in changing it back.

Ill keep that in mind, it was kind of nice having it short so it was out of the way getting on and off. Once I get my loader and a rear blade on this, I dont anticipate needing the PTO much anyway.
 
My 450 has the long handled one and its hard to swing your leg over it getting off and on. Most likely thats why it has a short lever on it because prevous owener has trouble getting on it.
 
That looks like a 656 type drawbar on it. Next time you get close to it, could you take some pictures on how that attaches. Front probably used the existing swinging drawbar bracket. Curious to see in more detail how the rear bracket is attached.
 
I would say you made an excellent trade for yourself. New rear rims and tubes to be installed especially. Not to mention that nice 3-point hitch and rest of tractor looks good.

Only giving up 1 nice and useful tractor (the Super h) and 1 albeit nice but pretty much otherwise useless tractor (the all-fuel h). I do love the ole h's, but only the X1 suffix gasoline models have marginally enough hp to do anything with and even then can still be marginal. Dual fuel, or worse yet the lowly kerosene model, Farmall h's just do not have enough hp to do much with their further reduced hp so I always pass those over even when price is cheap.

Now you can install that nice Kelly loader on this 400 (or even your M down the road) and have something.
 
Not sure, but they look like pine trees. They are green year around, they do slow down in the winter.
 
He those are older pictures from the dealer, they used it all
summer with that landscaping rake for their lot.

As for the hitch, its built into the three point. Not sure if it goes
up to the original front mount or not.

Are you sure about that? It looks like you can see air around it on the left side in the last picture. Also, hitches that go on the three point usually hook into the lower arms.

There is green grass in the field too! :lol: He did say they were pictures from last summer.
 
I'm 99% sure that's a Saginaw 3-point hitch (http://www.saginawcountytractor.com/farmall), not a Worksaver.

I've read nothing but good things about them, I would like to put one on my SM at some point.

I would really love to see how the drawbar is hooked up as that's the biggest downside I can see with the Saginaw and the stock U shaped draw bar (you can use the stock draw bar but it interferes with the arms). The one on your 400 looks like it would be a major upgrade!
