When did IH put that system on the market and does anyone still have one and what was its official name? Thanks in advance. J.
 
I think you are referring to the Electrall system. Wardner is somewhat of the resident expert on that system, along with many others with experience on the system.
 
Electrall Was the name. (IIRC) 1954 was the date. The idea had interesting value (especially for generating standby power) there was a baler made with a motor on the top front driving the flywheel. If no one loads a picture I will find one I took at red Power Roundup.
Wardner (a frequent contributor) has a serious interest and knowledge of the system.
Two primary units were made. One on a trailer, and one installed on the tractor's belt pulley drive. Jim
 
The trailer type was used on any tractor with a 540 PTO but took quit a bit of HP to run at full capacity. So that depends on the tractor. I don't know if the trans mounted unit had a shifter Jim
 
There were at least two brochures printed on the Electrall unit.

The first brochure showed the unit mounted in the tractor, like you describe.

The second brochure showed it with three different mountings. The tractor side mount was one, the trailer mount was the second one, and the unit mounted on a pad that hooked up to the Fast Hich was the third type of mount.

I saw a trailer model sell a couple years ago at a nearby auction. I had no way of knowing if it still worked, but looked to be in good shape and stored inside. To my everlasting regret I passed on it that day. You have any idea of the worth of such a generator?
I remember vividly when that feature was introduced as I saw it mounted on a SMTA in an IH showroom.

That SMTA (with generator) pulling that baler with the top mounted elec motor was terrific at the RPRU in MN a couple years ago.

I enjoyed looking at that fine combination at Albert Lea. Most excellent. One question that has not been addressed is whether the Electroll unit is clutched, or "live" or continuously driven with a disconnect? Jim

The electrall gearbox is driven directly from the IPTO gear, so the electrall generator is turning whenever the engine is turning. There is no way to mechanically disconnect it. Of course generator does not produce electricity until the the switch is turned on, allowing the exciter to operate. Hey, anybody hear from Wardner lately?
