53 Super C, Spring in cyl head

Removed the cyl head from a 53 Super C. #4 has a coil spring inbedded in the metal around the end of the spark plug, but not close to the tip of the plug. Would think that the spring was stainless to stand the heat. The question: is it supposed to be there? and what is the purpose?
Thanks, Wayne K

If you take an old plug with the ground terminal filed or ground off, and insert it till it is just flush with the inside of the combustion chamber, then use a dremel tool to grind off any exposed helicoil, it will be best practices. That exposed coil can get hot and cause preignition. Jim

Thanks, I didn't think of a helicoil because of the expansion and uncoiling of the spring (almost an inch across at the bottom). Will cut it off and get back to restoring the tractor.
thanks again. Wayne
