Cost of Gear Oil - Here's What I Paid

I was able to get 15 gallons of 80W-90 for the SM through Advance Auto for a total price of $140. That's still a pricey oil change, but saved a fair amount through discounts and offers across two purchases.

I also picked up two oil seals for the bull pinions for a total of $11.77 for both.

Axle and PTO seals are on the list, but cross your fingers so that I don't get in there and find that I need bearings too.

That's not bad for these days. Once in a while Sam's has it. They had it the other day for $42 a bucket. They usually don't have gear oil though.

Went through that this summer. Changed the rear oil. 85-140 was
the cheapest against 80-90 or straight 90. I paid $57 for 5 gal and
had to used 15 gallon. I got it at advanced auto. I shopped long
and hard to find the cheapest stuff. Still better then the slop that
was in the rear end.

I have been buying mine through NAPA. $62 per 5 gallon bucket. I just grin and bear it. Good news is, you don't have to change the gear lube like the engine oil. I use 80W90.

I have considered buying a 55 gal drum and make the investment. I have 6 more tractors to do, and I doubt it will spoil over time. Also, there is a discount per gallon in the 55 gallon size, gets it down to around $56 per gallon. Still, a painful hit on the play money for play tractors.......

Up here in Canada Wallyworld sells 80x90 for less than 50. a bucket. I don't knoe of its any good or not nut thats what i put in my M and C. Kent

well, if your tractor is a "trailer queen" or just for show, I am not sure if the brand of oil matters as much. If you are working it, and especially if working it hard, I would stick with the better known brand names.

My opinion, your mileage may vary........

When these tractors were new, even into the 50's the various gear oil specs were not around, i.e. Gl-4 Gl-5 etc. Even the cheapest Gl-4 has way more anti-wear additives than what came new in the tractor. Gl-5 has twice as much anti-wear additive as Gl-4. Good luck finding Gl-1, 2 or 3.

They haven't had the buckets in this area for a while. They usually have 2 gallon size as the largest. I sure wouldn't mind finding it for that price.

If you talk to your fuel distributer, he will have GL-1 gear oil or can easily get it. Gear oil is not used so much anymore. I guess that is why it is getting high.

I've thought about cutting it with 50wt motor oil. I suspect the high content of sulpherized additives contributes to corrosion when you get inevitable condensation inside the case. Easier I guess to just use hy-tran.

40-50 Wt should work too I guess. I see some straight weights classified as GL1 on the label.
I need GL4 for old cars trucks built before 1980.
For tractors I don't know is hy tran has any EP characteristics. Be reasonable that it does. Thanks

The best looking gears I've seen on the old stuff I have has been in the MTA's, 400's and 450's. The Hy-tran type stuff holds water but doesn't seem to react with it. The other decent looking ones (as far as corrosion) are those that have been sitting with the OLD oil in them that is just plain old oil.

TSC used to have some oil that was labeled for the old ford tractors, 8n 9n etc. I can't remember how it was worded exactly but it sounded like a GL-2 or 3.

I buy it for $95 per barrel thru a Military Surplus outlet near me.
