4 wire alternator? Need some help.

What is the procedure for using a 4 wire alternator to convert my H to 12 volt neg ground? To tired of messing with it when cold and it doesn't want to start? I have done a 3 wire conversion (2 wires at the plug then the field terminal). I asked the local auto parts yard and all they have is the 4 wire ones there. Any help?

All 10SI Delco Alternators with internal regulator (common as grass) are three wire. 4 Wire based systems are early units with external regulator. Not what you need. Alternators from 1986 Nissan Pu (Hitachi) are also very fine. I know of no simple answer to the 4 wire issue. Look at the pictures of Delco 10SI series and see if that is what you have. Jim

Thanks Jim. I will head back tomorrow and talk to the guy. He said he use to sell a lot of them but hasnt had any in for a while. I'll check tomorrow and let you guys know how I make out.

I've got Farmalls with both the Delco and Hitachi alternator. The Hitachi is a little smaller and was a pretty easy fit. Delco works better for me on the N series Ford tractors.

Exactly the same. The Hitachi L terminal is the same as the 10SI #1 terminal. The Hitachi S terminal is equal to the 10SI #2 terminal.
Use insulated female spade terminals (or shrink tubing) in the connections to keep them from shorting together. Jim

I put a Hitachi onto our Super W6, going to do the H this spring. Got the kit from Charlieu on this forum, SUPER guy! Here is a pic on the Super W6.

I was so tired of the 6V battery always leaking, tired of having to generator & regulator adjust to charge. This tractor only see's use when it snows. Otherwise its sits in the shed. I converted igniton over to pertronix, also got there 12V coil without any resistors, & set of wires. Went thru starter just cause, rewired tractor. Charlieu has diagrams on his website. Now when starting the tractor, have a chargine system that works. Also it will charge @ 400rpm, 10si need to be reved up over 850rpm. I like the small size of the Hitachi, lots of room on Super W6. Not so much on the H. Thats my 2 cents to this subject.

the one's you are looking at are most likely the later model delco's they are smaller than the 10Si, i don't know the series number but they work fine and only use the battery terminal and one of the small wires for switch wire the rest are for newer electronic components that require closely regulated voltage so i've been told,i've hooked up a couple but right off hand i don't recall which one of the small wires was used for the switch wire
