Super C Governor Problem

I had posted earlier that my throttle would not move the linkage to the carb on my SC. The consensus was that the spring in the Governor was broke. Well I have it all apart and the spring is in good shape. Is it possible that something in the governor is not allowing the throttle linkage to move the carb linkage? Thanks

Thanks , I'm hoping someone will be able to tell what the problem is before I tear into the governor any further. Bud

An opinion. The linkage from the throttle hand lever moves rod/s to the governor housing. If these move as they should, the connection of the lever to the shaft going inside could be broken.
Inside there are nuts and washers holding a spring lever to the shaft. That lever could be worn and slipping on the shaft.
If the weights are pivoting on their pins, but not loose, and the Governor rock shaft is free to slide, it should work. One of these is either jammed or worn. Jim

All of the levers move as they should and with the tractor not running you can move the throttle and thus move the rod to the carb. Now with the tractor running its all stuck . The weights seem to pivit ok . What is the purpose of the thrust spring and pin? I used a magnet to try to get the pin to move out of the main shaft and it doen't want to move. Could this have anything to do with my problem??

The weights must move the thrust bushing evenly and the same from both weights. The weights must be free on their pins, but not loose or wiggly. The ball thrust bearing must be smooth, and the races need to be smooth where they touch the rock shaft prongs. Can the output (to carb) linkage be moved by hand when the engine is running? Jim

If the governor shaft bumper ( item 30 in the TC44 Parts Manual ) doesn't move out of the main shaft could this cause the linkages to bind up?? Just grasping at straws.
Bud

Something (like worn thrust bushing, or the main governor bushing in the distributor drive end), is jamming the output to the rock shaft (output shaft to the left side of the engine) can you wiggle the gear shaft up and down easily? Jim

That is possible, not a straw. The spring and components in that assembly can possibly cause the gear to bind. Jim

Yes it wiggles up and down. When I pulled the gear out and reached in the distribtor drive will move a little but not much. Any ideas on how to get the shaft bumber and spring out? By the way thanks a bunch for all the help.

If the shaft end wiggles up and down more than 1/16" I would replace the main bearing. The Bumper spring assembly might be easiest to remove when it is out of the tractor. Then (as far as I can see, it will require some solvent, and careful manipulation to get it free. jim

Do you have a part number for the main bearing? I don't see it in my parts book. Funny thing is this problem happened after the tractor had set for a month or two. Everything was fine when I shut it down. Its kind of like a catastrophe failure versus a worn bearing. Would it make sense that the fact that the shaft bumper will not extend could allow the pinion and everying thing attached to slide forword causing my problem???

It could, (I wish I was there) That bearing might be in the front cover illustration. It is troublesome in many high hour tractors and replaced, I do believe it is available.
I would sure get the bumper operational first, to see if that is the issue. Jim

Jim
I finally got the bumper working and it appears to have solved the problem. Thanks a bunch for sticking with me.
