Might be a dumb question but how do you remove the camshaft from the block, i dont want to break the gear or damage the shaft.

Remove all lifters, Remove the oil pump. Remove the front cover. remove the retainer plate behind the gear. Support the shaft as it is withdrawn from the block towards the front. Jim

(quoted from post at 20:42:49 01/23/13) Remove all lifters
That won't happen. Take off the rocker arms, turn the block bottom side up and push the lifters away from the camshaft. . . .

Ah yes. correct you are. To avoid having it upside down, magnets could be put on the sides of the lifters to hold them up, Or possibly O rings tight enough. Jim

As stated before, remove lifters and oil pump, then try to pull out from the gear end. If you try to pry on the gear you will break the gear and/or camshaft (ask me how I know). If push comes to shove, on the back side of the cam is a plug, like a freeze plug, it can be removed and the cam can be tapped out from the rear. I had a C113, that had sat for a loooong time and everything was seized. Be patient and good luck with it.

Thanks guys, and this motor has also been sitting for a long time so everything is pretty sticky i have everything gutted from the block except the camshaft so i think ill try the suggestion of removing the plug from the other end and tapping it out, Thanks for the help!

You cant get any o-rings on the lifters. Usually the lifters if pushed all the way up will stay as the bottom bart of the body doesent lift that high so its got some varnish and the lifters will stay .

Why do you need to remove the cam to start with as there are no parts to replace. Do you have the engine on a stand. You can push the lifters up as far as they will go then after removing oil pump the cam can be removed by removing the cap screws behind the cam gear. If you can turn the cam over there realy isnt any reason to pull it. I have refreshed ,rebuilt or whatever you want to call it and there realy isnt any reason to remove the cam. Be careful removing the oil pump as sometimes it is stuck in the boss where the two outside bolts hold it in place. There isnt a real reason to even remove the oil pump as it can be serviced still in place. Too bad other posts talk about removing lifters first just makes it hard to believe advice sometimes given on this site. Some have never did the job yet they THINK they know ho to do it.

I think he should take out the cam if he were to have the block degreased. He didn't say he was going to do that of course, but as gummy as he says it is, and having the block stripped this far, I think it would be a good idea

You probably need to have that engine block hot tanked. Then your cam will probably slide out easily. If you do decide to do this make sure all pipe plugs are reinstalled before engine reassembly. Hal

Bad think about hot tanking is it removes the paint that was put on so the cast fines didnt get into the lube system unless you want to repaint.
