Hand crank assembly on H

In a pinch at times early in my ownership of my 1940 H I hand cranked it to start it and it worked well, however I had to custom make a hand crank handle to fit on what was left of the crank dowel sticking out the front end, it eventually broke off even more, so now there is not enough to work with. So what exactly is that linkage assembly called ( running through the front of the tractor ) that connects to crank pulley and are they hard to change out. I would eventually like to find another good used assembly with proper hand crank in the near future. Ebay has been good source of parts for me for my H but I am not sure of the proper name this assembly is called.

Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch will have the assembly and maybe the crank. No web site, phone # is 785-548-7437, NE KS. I bought one for a SM and one for a 350 from him last year. You will probably have to remove the upper bolster, I have removed a couple that were rusted shut. Easy to get out if not rusted, the fun is removing the bolster.

I enjoyed those pics, never had mine tore down that far, only
thing I have had to do to mine is rebuild the lift all unit and
rebuilt the top end, One of these days I plan to go over it better
cosmetic wise, paint etc, but I still work mine. I think I did ok on
it bought mine about 18 years ago, gave $700 for it delivery
included from Kentucky to boot ( about 250 miles ) My hand
crank repair is low on priorities at this time as higher priority
reared its head and just ordered new water pump/pulley
assembly, mine was wore out and getting wobbly nip this in the
bud before I tear up a radiator. My Lift all rebuild seemed to have
worked out well I use a boom to lift V-8 engines and move them
around with it of course I have a 3 point hitch on my H

The entire front bolster assembly needs to be removed from the frame rails. The hand crank assembly has to be removed and installed from the engine side.

Thanks all for the input, the hand crank itself is not the issue, but after hearing what is involved to replace the linkage through the bolster ! heck with that for now I will just be sure my starter and battery stay in good working order, can"t have any down time right now. I am really surprised as most everything is so easy to work on or get to on these things, I guess they never expected to need to replace the hand crank linkage. I might try one more weld job on the end of the dowel once more before I go pulling my bolster off.
