966 tach not working

I recently bought a 966, it has some things that need fixing. One of the problems is that the temp gauge and tach doesnt work. where do i start? Anyone else had this problem?

Tristan, It is a pretty small # of possibilities that are the problem!
Cable,
Tack,
Drive mechanism there on the front of the engine.
As old as the 66 series is... Cable & Tack are 1 & 2 in close order! Hope this helps.

What does your tack lens look like? Is it real clear and shiney? If it is it shouldn't be all of the originals are dull and cracked. If yours is real nice someone replaced the lens with an aftermarket lens. I did that on one and it took me four tries assembling it before it worked correctly. The tiniest movement or misalinement of the gasket or lens ring and the needle hangs up.
Is the inner square shaft of the tach turning?

As a matter of fact is fairly clear and seems to be in good condition. I have not pulled it apart or anything yet. I will have to check to see if the shaft turns. thanks

if it's an electric gauge check for voltage, one terminal should have 12 volts the other goes to sending unit,if it has voltage ground the one to the sender momentarily see if the guage works if it doesn't gauge is bad, if it does ground the wire at the sender momentarily if it works sender is bad if it doesn't wire is the problem,as for the tach unscrew the tach cable form the tach try turning cable with your fingers if it turns your your drive is damaged or the cable square end that fits the drive is rounded off or cable is broken,if it won't turn start engine while it's disconnected from the tach to see if it turns also make sure the square end that goes into the tach isn't rounded off, you should be able to spin the drive end of the tach in the direction it turns and get it to move if its working
