Gentleman, I have found a 706 Diesel with a 282 engine I believe. Good sheet metal good TA, and good front tires. Backs are well worn, He says it does use a little oil. 3 pt. hitch power steering. He is asking 3,500 firm. Is that a good price for this tractor, I don't know much about these. Any help is deeply appreciated, Thanks

Putting 2000 in rear tires would give you a $5500 tractor that uses a little oil. Not too bad if it starts well, and uses l quart a day when worked. If it uses a gallon a day it is toast. If it fits the needs you have and is not guzzling oil I think it is a fair value. Jim

Love it when they say it uses a LITTLE oil , yea right . So you give him what he wants and ya sink 2 large in back tires and tubes thenyou find out that that little drink problem is two three qt.s in four or five hours run time . Well i'll just rebuild it , ok fine so you jump into it to find that this is not going to be and IN FRAME as the crank needs turned so you get into a out of frame rebuild and you find the head has a crack . Now your really into this tractor your 3500 dollar joy is not heading into and 8 grand nightmare. Myself i would walk away and let him chew on it , might take him some salt and pepper to add some flavor to it.

i would just tell him i want to work it for 1/2 a day. why should he refuse if he's honest and your serious.

Just asking, but if it was the German diesel, how much extra would the same deal be worth? I have an older German diesel and was just wondering.

Depends on how good of shape it is in . As decent one sold at a sale down the road from me here two weeks ago for 4275 . Started good on a morning when it was 18 degrees out with no either on it's own . had decent tires around 70% three point wide ft. flat tops 2 remotes they warrantyed the T/A to be good and sold her on the ride and drive , in other words if you bought it qand found something OTHER then a alt. not charging or weak batterys or a slow turning starter you did not own it . There was four 706's in that sale two diesels and two gassers . The other diesel was a nice older 706 with a D282 wide ft. and fast hitch and again she was a ride and drive BUT Mikey called the weak batterys as they did have to jump start her but the glow plugs were working . and it did 4050 .

Many sellers will call a quart every morning a little oil when working it. I think of a little oil as having to add oil at 50 hours and more as you near the 100hr oil change.

In the 80's our big tractor was known to use a qt a day, and I would call that more than a little. But it was a good tractor and it got the work done.
