Don't want to highjack the 856 thread. Smae basic question. 656, decent rubber and str8 tin. Engine has a knock but will run. Cost of doing the rebuild, machine work and parts only, including IPTO if needed and clutch job while it's split? 1500 too much?

Just a couple questions is it gas or diesel,nf or wf,fasthitch or 3 point, fenders or no fenders? A buddy had a chance on a 656 dsl that ran but was tough looking (sat outside on a feeder wagon)had wf, flat top fenders, fasthitch and decent rubber for $1900. he heehawed around to long and missed it. I would say more around the $1000 mark for the one you are looking at.

The primary issue is not the tractor, but you. If you need/want the tractor, if you can be modestly certain that money invested will pay back in terma of usefulness, not resale, and if you are capable and enthusiastic about the rework effort (both as a hobby, and for the outcome) then do it. Every project of that magnitude will have elements that are found to be better than expected to cheer you up. But there will be, as well, micro disasters that burn your biscuits. The resale value of the components if parted out would certainly recoup the money. Jim

OK forgot, sorry. Diesel, 3 point, flat top fenders. Tractor looks good.

Yea I'm not looking hard but could use a tractor in the 50-90 HP range.

Rick. IMO, Rebuild your engine! You wouldn't think twice about dropping $2500 for a replacement engine for your pickup! Unless the rear-end on your tractor is questionable then rebuild yours or find a suitable complete motor elsewhere.
Or park yours, buy another complete running tractor and keep yours for parts! there are a boat load of 656 of various kinds in Tractor House from $4500 to $7500 all day long! hope this helps.
Bought mine,(656 LP, W-F-E, 3pt, abandoned, out in a pasture, for $1k back in the spring. a very sound tractor and knee deep in New rear rubber! Hope this helps!

Thanks John but I don't own it.......yet. Guy is wanting 2500 for it which with the engine knock is high IMO. He told me to give him a counter offer.

Over alll it looks good. Been kept in a shed.

656D
WF
3 point
good rubber
TA works
Open station with flat top fenders.

Engine knocks but a guy could drive it on a trailer.

Rick, Tractor data says she will weigh in the neighborhood of 6500 lbs, she scraps out at $600 + - Dollars, maybe somemore if the guy is willing to deal with parting it out!
Running but definitely has an engine problem. IMO up to 15, $100 dollar bills waved under his nose!!! (start with 10 then 12 then 14 stops at 15) if he doesn't take it, Tell him when Pigs Fly!, and go look elsewhere!
$2500 + $2500 Rebuild you are better off taking potluck on most any tractor listen in Tractor House!
Unless you have a neighbor with agood engine, bad tranny 560 Dsl, that He will sell it to you for $1K I think i would proceed very cautiously. Hope this helps!
