Is there a way a find the serial # when it is beyond seeing. Serial plate is so scratched, painted over, and unreadable.

You should be able to find a number on the engine somewhere. Usually a flat machined area will have the number stamped in.

I've had pretty good luck with paste-type chemical paint stripper, an old toothbrush, and paper towels. If the front of the tag is badly damaged, you may be able to make out the stamped number by looking at the back of the tag if you're lucky.

The engine serial only matches the tractor serial on very early production models.

Most of the time they're "close" because the engines had a separate serial number sequence, and engines were used in power units, and other tractors (i.e. an H engine would also be used in W4, O4, OS4, etc.).

The only place the real serial number exists is on that plate.

If that plate is gone or unreadable, you're generally SOL unless you have a bill of sale or some other documentation that has the serial number written on it.

If you posted the tractor model in the past? Sorry I don't remember. Model tractor may help on a answer.
