Farmall 706 engine which is better?

I was looking at some 706 Farmalls for sale and and most have the D282 Engine in them but I found one 1967 model with the D310 german diesel in it. What are the most notable differences in these two engines and which one would be a better tractor in the long run do you think?

The general consensus is in favor of the German engine. It has a great reputation, and it seems to be powerful, adjustable, and economical. Jim

I agree with Jim's statement. One caution I would give you is that if the German diesel is extremely high houred and might be in need of a a rebuild in the near future, it will cost you over double for the parts versus what the parts will cost for a 282 rebuild, or at least that was what I found out 17 years ago. They are a great engine and last a long time, but they get pricey to rebuild.

The 310 is probably the better choice, less effort to start. The 310 in a 706 has different compression than a 686 which we had. I bought a 706 with the 282 in it and ended up with a major overhaual shortly after getting it. We had trouble getting 72 hp out of it on the dyno a week or two after the overhaul. Ran really well but smoked terribly when getting near the 72 mark. The 686 if you didn't work it hard enough would ooze black from unburn't fuel on the muffler. It would pull the 4-16 easier at the same fuel as the 706. We had the 686 resleeved so it would start easier to the 706 sleeve/ piston assemblies.My former neighbor still uses his 706 with a 310 for chores alot yet even today. I don't think you would go wrong with either but the 310 is a little better from my experience. Hope this helps.

Both engines are "cold blooded."

The D310 is the more desirable from a collector standpoint but D282 has the advantage of glow plugs for cold weather starting. A healthy D282 with good glow plugs will start when a D310 will just run the battery dead.

Both are good engines the 310 just happens to be a little better. For starters it doesn"t ues glow plugs which can be a pain in the butt. However if you are vigilant about keeping your glow plugs and cables in really good shape the 282 will start okay with patience. The 310 will start really well with either a block or tank heater. If you have neither of those things the 310 is not going to start very well in cold weather. I would not hesitate to buy a well maintained 310 with 5000 or less hours of running time. You start pushing 7000 to 8000 hours and you could be getting close to overhaul time which will be ungodly expensive even if you can find all of the parts. The 282 is okay but I would much rather have a 310 with some life left in it. 282"s also tend to have some head gasket issues.

310 hands down.I've owned both.310 has more power longer life,starts way better-no contest.Mine is turbocharged,puts out 95+horse and has over 10,000 hrs.There is no overhaul on even the distant horizon.I've owned it for over 30 years and will keep it till the end....

If it were me it would be the 310 hands down if i was going diesel. and if it was me and there was a choice between a D282 and a 291 gasser it would be the gasser over the D282 . But that is just me.
