Starter rotation

Ok Folks,

I had a Farmall Cub given to me.It is missing a few items. Starter, Magneto and Generator or Alternator I have not had a chance to look at it in depth yet. I do know that the motor is free and will turn. Question will a starter off of an A work or at least turn it in the right direction. It is to cold to bust a knuckle to find out. It is a 1949 cub with lights, so generator or Alternator is needed to recharge battery from useage and starting of the tractor.

Thanks,
James

JFYI 99% of all engine made turn the same direction other wise it would be hard for companies like Wagner and muncie to build transmissions etc that will interchange. As for the starter that I can not say

There is a tremendous number of engines out there that turn the opposite direction of your 99% figure.

If the starter mounts behind the flywheel there is a chance it may work. Otherwise not. I am not familiar with a cub.

James,
Does your starter on the cub come in from the front side of the flywheel? The A starter comes in from the backside of the flywheel .Your mag is also special to just the cub.

Yes there are but they are not common and no where near as many so the ones I am talking about. Now starter motors that is a total different thing. As a matter of fact I do not know of any engine I have ever seen that did not turn the same as other, other then one and it ran both ways and that is how the thing had both forward and reverse you simply shut it off and started it back wards to go back wards

Here are a few pictures of an alternator kit that I have designed for the Farmall Cub to mount the Hitachi alternator.
The starter for the CUB enters the flywheel from the front. I agree with old 99% of all engine turn the same direction, CCW when you look at the flywheel from the rear.

just by looking at the fan you can tell the rotation of that engine, and also when cranking them you crank clockwise from front. dont know of any of these old tractors that dont turn this way. depends all on how starter mounts.

Stick yer hand crank in the slot and crank it clockwise. The engine will continue to spin in the same direction.

Yer flywheel is firmly attached to yer crankshaft, thus it will spin in the same direction.

Yer starter has to spin counter-clockwise in order to spin the flywheel clockwise on this Cub.

For the Cub, it's easy to get the picture because you're looking from the radiator back and can see yer starter motor, etc.

All my diesels and gassers that I have turn clockwise if standing in front. What brands turn the other direction? I'm curious to know.

The starter from an A will turn the wrong direction as the Cub starter turns backwards in regards to the A. You need one for a Cub of that yr. When you say Cub what yr is it my answer is for early Cubs with the 60cuin engine. Any starter with the drive end pointing away from the radiator will turn different than the starters drive end pointing toward the radiator.

ALL the diesel engines I have and have messed with spun the same direction as the gas one did other then the Detroit that if you did not watch what was going on would start forward or back wards but that was no was was meant to happen. I know all the Cat and Cummins diesels and the Ih etc ALL spin the same as the gas engines I have been around. Ya also depending on how you look at it the old JD engines didn't because the crank was side ways and the rotation was still the same

Or am I all wet and not thinking straight? I know all modern gas and diesels turn the same way, which is clockwise.

They were turning ccw if standing in the front is what you are saying? I've never been around them before.

The engine that was in my TD-^ IH dozier turned the exact same direction as ALL the other gas/diesel engines I have messed with so maybe you need to back up a bit and rethink things

Like I say, I know my Cummins and Powerstrokes both turn clockwise. I was sure of myself about the IH gas start diesels, but now I am trying to talk myself out of it. However, I know the mags have a CCW rotation.

The IH gas start diesels all turn the same direction as the gas engines, clockwise. The reason the mags on the diesels turn opposite as those on the gas is due to an idler gear between the cam and crankshaft gears.

not a chance, turn same direction as gas. why do you think they came with a crank like the gas ones... so you can crank them. have done this many times, started a diesel engine with a hand crank.

Rotation of things like starter and mags due to the mounts can/do rotate different on different engines but as I said 99% of engines rotate the same. As for the GAS/DIESEL IH engines they spin the same as thew gas ones do. Just think about it this way. What would happen if engines did not spin the same way and some one say dropped in a V-8 in place of a straight 6 and the 2 did not rotate the same you would have a night mare to fix that so most as I said 99% rotate the same so swaps etc can be made

When I bought my T6 crawler a couple years ago, which has the same motor as a M ,there was no starter.I grabbed the starter off my W6 and slapped it on and tried it.It spun it backwards beautifully.I had to build one for it out of various parts and the starter drive is for a cub.The power unit and dozer use a different starter than the tractor farmall M.
