424 axle oil leak

Now that the 584 is running gonna think about getting into 424.It leaks oil from axle carrier where axle comes out. I assume an oil seal and or gasket.Diagrams look like I have to pull lift to get to it. Is there a way to remove axle hub and not get into the transmission housing ? I am guessing not .

Does the 424 have 90wt transmission lube in it?
Yes, to remove axle, you have to take 3pt housing off top of diff, take a snap ring off end of axle at bull gear before axle can be removed. IIRC older models had bolt and washer in end of axle instead of snap ring. See caseih.com parts search for parts 424.

I run hy tran in it-same as my 584 . It seems to do okay but always milky from condensation as I park in the barn so no rainwater . I think I may try to pull that axle soon as I am tired of the leaks. I did look at the diagram online and it looks fairly straight forward . Of course 50 year old tractors have a way of making everything difficult when working on them.
 
Hi Warren,
The B-414,434,424 models were designed to use 90W gear lube in the transmission/differential. Some industrial models like 3444 used the transmission as a hydraulic reservoir with Hytran instead of 90W.

There is nothing wrong with using Hytran in the 424 transmission/differential but be prepared for some leaks. In fact Hytran is probably better for moisture conditions and operation in cold weather.
I can remember using our 434 in -25F weather and you had to leave the transmission in the gear you wanted to use the next day. It would take a good half hour of running before you could shift gears easily.
