Here's some pictures of my Super H that I paid for back in July, flew up to NY in my plane, (easy part) to look at it, but then had get it home to Pa., just got it here back on the 7th of this month. Believe it's original paint, some touch up on the grill, sheet metal is pretty straight & seems to run quite well. Probably remove the fenders though, grew up on of my uncles farms that had farmed with Farmalls, don't remember any of their tractors with fenders. Serial # is 4137 DJ, can someone tell me what the DJ signifies ? Thanks, Now hopefully I can attach the photos

Nice looking Super h. Hope to have one myself someday (although I do currently have a 1951 straight h and like it very much for what it is).

In regards to the fenders: I would not remove them, but I would add the riser/extender brackets that move the fenders out closer to your tires as well as raise the height of them. The brackets are even adjustable so as to be compatible with different tire spacings. Tractor is just so much safer to use with fenders and the farmall fenders do like nice once these brackets are installed.

D indicates the the tractor was equiped with what IH refered to as 5000 foot pistons. More compression to help the power at a higher elevation. J, equiped with a rockford clutch.

Good looking Super H . Keep the fenders, I was raised on one and they are a lot safer. I installed the extensions on mine and it helps give you so much more room. I don't think the paint is original, if you look close it is pealing under the super H emblem.

The dealer stickers are much newer than the tractor. They were probably added when it was resold as a used tractor.

Thanks for the responses so far, never understood the fenders, I guess if they were farther out it would help, as I said two of my uncles had Farmalls on their farm,I really grew up on the tractors. My one uncles oldest son had got his pant leg caught in the PTO (shield wasn't on), broke his one leg, peeled the skin of his whole calf off his other leg, was in traction for 5 or 6 weeks, happened over 40yrs. ago, but since I right there when it happened, I remember it like just happened yesterday, that's why it scares me when I see tractors on here without the PTO cover installed, only takes 1/2 a sec. for something bad to happen ! I guess that's why I never thought of the fenders making the tractor any safer. The PO late uncle who owned it, related that the owner before him was killed after getting knocked off the seat by a tree limb while mowing with a bush hog !Fenders didn't help. Just my 2 cents worth ! AL

Nice catch Al! We really enjoy ours; "53 stage 1 like yours...but sure wasn"t as nice when we got it as yours! Usually try to get to those before someone exports "em outta state! LOL musta been the plane that beat us to it!

I agree, you will be much more accepting of the fenders if you add the spacers to raise them up and the extension plates to push them out to the wheels.

Fenders just complete the tractor. We never had fenders on the M or 560 when I was a kid, and I thought the ones that did were really neat. All the collector tractors get fenders if they don't come with them.

Those fenders give you something to hang onto when looking behind you. I think they are pretty nice to have.

Growing up in the wilds of far NEPA, fenders, if installed, lasted until the first snowfall. When the tire chains went on, the fenders came off, either voluntarily with wrenches, or involuntarily when the first cross-chain broke. Additionally, they made getting on and off much more of an effort. Stylish, perhaps - practical, no. My vote - take them off and sell them to the fashion conscious.

Al - I too own a '53 Stage 1 "DJ" Super H. Near as I can tell it was originally delivered to Canandaigua, NY - elevation approx 750 ft. It is puzzling then why it is equipped with the 5,000 ft altitude option.

My opinion the red color would be a much darker red in color if original.
When looking to buy a tractor I discount a tractor a lot that does not have fenders. Reason if I put on a set there not going to color match.

That tractor came from a dealer less than 5 miles from my house. I used to go to that dealer with my Grandfather for parts for his 300 Utility and new cub cadets. Dealer closed their doors in the late 70's. If I remember that also sold Surge milking equipment. Still lots of farms in the area, though more and more are being purchased by Amish farmers from your neck of the wood. Tractor is in beautiful shape, good luck with it.
