I am going to go with 12V on the SM. Were there any 12V generators that you could swap in with the original mounting brackets? Thanks...

Pete

Later tractords had 12v gens on them with same housing and mounts or yours can be changed to 12v. Just send it so a gen shop and they can ghange it then get new regulator and change bulbs and away you go.

I had a 12v gen/reg from a '57 Chevy on my SM for years. When it quit,I replaced(and rewired the tractor)it with a one wire 'Delcotron' alternator.Best thing I could have done.Liked the alternator so well,I redid my SH too!

if your 6 volt generator is good you can use a 12 volt regulator with it and it will work fine the 6 volt gen can produce 17 volts sufficient for volt system,i have and h and know of a couple more setup this way, had the gen checked out buy a rebuild shop he matched a regulator and told me he disconnected the third brush my gen had because it used a cutout relay instead of a regulator originally, only draw back is most gen won't charge at low rpms

All of the gas-start diesels, as far as I am aware, had 12 volt generators. This would include MD through 450D, WD-6 through W-450D, and the TD-6 and descendents. There may have been alternators on some of the very late ones, but I never saw one in the flesh.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

SMD was 12V pos. ground. I imagine those generators are not too plentiful though.

The late 450 and 350 12 volt generator fits mount same as any old 6 volt but the adjustable pulley was not used. Shaft lengths of armature are different so you would most likely need the pulley and belt adjustment slotted bracket also.

You can put an alternator on the original bracket, it may need to be flipped upside down and you'll need some threaded rod. Don't know about a generator you can buy but I know 6V generators can be rebuilt to 12V.
