Seal Quality?

I decided to take the advice and double up on the oil seal on the pto shaft. Local IH dealer is an hour away. Called car quest they had in stock. The seals thet carry are mfg by Moog. They are much heavier and a wider seal surface than the SKF provided by IH and......less than half the price! Part number on the pto seal for SM is 473214 it was not made in china.

I agree on the national is better quality than SKF, and the
nationals are usually a better price too! Not to mention that
federal mogul has a great online catalog where you can
interchange part numbers to find a seal or if you have the
dimensions of a seal or bearing you can put those in and it will
list the 10 closest matches in size.

I have a local dealer that sells SKF, most of the CaseIH seals I have bought are Nationals. I usually cannot tell the difference. There is an occasional CaseIH National that is different, although the CaseIH number was used to cross to SKF. In that case the Nationals look better than SKF. The National CaseIH seals are usually 1/3 to twice the price of seals bought elsewhere. In what way are the Nationals "better"? I have never had either leak--but my tractors don't get used much. By the way the SKF seals are really Chicago Rawhide that SKF aquired quite a while back. I have always thought that Chicago Rawhide and National were equivalent.

Most of the time CNKS, the SKF's seem to skimp on the width with the part number cross overs. My local bearing place can get what ever I want and they are competitive most of the time. I have ordered online from time to time if I have a large order. I have an old seal & bearing book that I can get the dimensions of the original seals.

I bought these for an old sickle mower a while back. National on the left and it's SKF equivalent on the right. The national was less money.

neblinc, I have seen a few like that--if the one I take out looks like the wider seal, I usually take the SKF back and either get a replacement from the dealer or get the original one from CaseIH, if there is that much difference -- I have only done that a couple of times, otherwise I think the SKF's are ok, at least I have had no problems. But, I will keep what you said in mind.
