656 stuck in gear

A friend of mine has a 656 gasser and the other day he was loading it on his trailer and now it is stuck in reverse. From what I read in the archives this seems to be a common problem as the shifter linkages get worn. My question is does anyone know of a good source of parts to rebuild the linkage without going into the poor house? I didn't find much in archives except they are pricey at the dealer. Thanks in advance Greg NE

Yep they are at that and in MHOP they are a real pain sometimes ya can cheat with shim washers and the shifters all snugged together and installing a new pin on the shifter rod and i have had the machine shop make a little larger pin and redrill the hole thru the shaft for the larger pin to take out some slop. So if the shaft pin went between the 1st and Reverse and 2nd and 3rd shift lever shimming will stop that If it sheared the pin then a new shifter pin will fix that . And if one of the headed pin clippys fell off and the pin came out a new pin and clippy will fix that.

Until you get it fixed shift real slow and easy always go to neutral move the lever around to even up the linkage then slip ot into desired gear. Keep the cover off of the linkage mechanism saves time when needing to fix the jam.

The 656 has the same linkage as the 544, does it not? I was able to rebuild mine without buying any parts. I made new "gates" (the notched plates in the selector mechanism) with a Dremel and drill press and drilled out the linkages and installed oversize pins. Note that the pins in the final link are supposed to be welded in. If these welds are broken you"ll have lots of slop. You also want to make sure the neutral detent is working. On mine the ball has worn a groove in the selector shaft, rendering the detent useless. Someday I"ll weld up the groove and turn it down on the lathe.
