Farmall A trans to PTO shaft

Just got the A put back together. Still have the trans cover off. When I turn the engine over with the crank and the PTO disconnected, the PTO shaft turns. When I turn the PTO shaft I can feel that there is resistance like the two shafts are touching each other. Could The input shaft have gotten pressed against the PTO shaft? I did have to hammer on the drive shaft yolk to get it on but only used a little 1 pound or so brass hammer and a socket. I tried prying on the rear of the input shaft coupler and could not get it to move away.
If I leave it alone, do you think it will either wear or move enough to allow free-er movement? Deffinitely don't want to take it apart again. The yolk is a bear to get off.

They will turn seperate, just feel some resistance like they are dragging on each other. Thinking of removing the PTO shaft and taking a little off the end to make some more clearace.

I will definitely look at going that route. Looks like I got something to try tomorrow after church. Much appreciated!

Loosen it up and stick a feeler gauge (or the ti[ of two screw drivers in the crack. If the drag goes away, score. If it stays, the solution is not there! Jim

That shaft needs to be free and sliding back and forth without any binding. Take it off and see why it binds as it needs to move free back and forth. If you need another shaft i have some.Did you not get the shift lever assy installed so the lever doesent have any bind when moving it in and out of gear.

The shims are for setting the gear lash and have nothing to do with the drive shaft on those units as its a hollow shaft with a ribbed collar on one end for moving the shaft badk and forth other end has two dogs that enguage the main tranny shaft when in gear and have internal splines. His problem is why that shaft isnt free when out of gear.

We had a customer's tractor in our shop recentley with the same problem, we found the collar that engages the shafts to drive had several burrs on it & the engagement lever was bent enough to cause the same problem you have. I would make sure that the lever is pulling the coller away far enough first, then clean up the collar with a file it is alot softer metal than the shaft. The burrs are from all those years of non live pto driveline use.

I think I left some info out. I didn't remove any of the shafts earlier. I was replacing the input seal and bearing on the front of the transmission. It isn't the sliding collar that is binding, it is the respective shafts.

Maybe this will help, note shims at X. Copied from I & T manual No. IH -8

My concern with adjustiing those shims is it would change the contact area between the PTO gear and the Gear on the top shaft. I am going to look at adding a thicker gasket behind the entire PTO/Belt Pulley assembly. That should bring everything out together.

The shims are for the gear lash pto gears has nothing to do with his main shaft binding up. He did something wrong when installing new bearing on the input shaft. That will have nothing to do with the pto.

I loosened the assembly today and it freed the shaft (not that the shaft was completely stuck, just dragging on the trans. shaft). Gonna double the gasket up and use some gasket maker inbetween the layers. Appreciate the help!
