Farmall m valve/belly pump question

Yes, that is their purpose. They can also be used to raise and lower a loader, plus being able to tilt the bucket. There are many more uses.

They are all pressure out, the return needs to go back to the reservoir. The basic system consists of a lever and rod connected to the pump, assuming you still have it. That is power up, gravity down. Your valves, with the return to the reservoir allow pressure up and down. The lever must be locked to the rear for the valves to work.

All pressure out? I did not know that, just run the return back to the reservoir by where you fill it huh?

Probably, but we need much more info. An M has only one way hydraulics if it is a belly pump, (Liftall) that can have one or more additional valves for two way use. If it has been retrofitted with a live pump, it can also be either one way or two way. Let us know and we can supply diagrams. Jim

Basically the way it's rigged up now, the belly supplies the external valve. If I wanted to operate a 3 point and a hydraulic disc, I would remove the single valve and install a double valve. Right? Why did the previous owner install that valve then, seems a bit redundant

OK, you didn't tell me that you had a factory 2-way valve. You have to have the lower rod pulled back for the upper one to work. You have pressure up and down -- I do not have one of those, but it looks like the return is back to the reservoir. I believe that particular setup only allows one implement or a 3 point. Jim can probably tell you how to use an additional implement, as stated I have never used one of those. But, you can use the lower rod for an implement if you only need gravity drop. The answer I gave above is starting from scratch with aftermarket valves.

The use of a multi-valve open center valve block in place of the "christmas tree" (that is the common name for the valve in your picture, which is a period correct two way IHC accessory) is easy. The original hydraulics were a miracle, and thus incredibly useful.
The inner lever must still be pulled back and locked to make it work. Jim

The diagrams should help. The block of valves are easiest to install as they are a single block of stacked valves with the open center system pre connected. Do not operate more than one valve at a time, they will not provide expected outcomes, and if on a loader, could be dangerous. Jim
One cylinder

More than one

The factory installed the valve, or the owner or dealer did -- it was an option to get 2 way hydraulics. Disks, plows, etc work best with gravity down, depth adjusted with spacers on the hydraulic cylinder.
