Farmall Super MTA Steering is Loose

Does anyone know the likely parts needed, cost, and a place to purchase the parts to tighten up the loose steering on the tractor. Any pictures would be helpful. I am also looking for a power steering kit as well. How well does the priority valve system work versus the reservor and mounted pump system?

pretty hard to tell whats needed without doing a visual inspection on it. wide front? narrow front? can be anything from steering wheel down to the front tires.

carter and gruenewald equipment will have all the parts to rebuild the front bolster. for the power steering, steiner tractor sells all the stuff to run off a live pump.

Brady as Rustred said it could be many things, but the first things I would be checking would be the U joint just under the hood and second would be the bearing on the end of the steering shaft on the top of the bolster. If them two things are good then it could be worm gear, steering gear, upper and lower bolster bushings, or the bolster shaft it self. HTH

First thing to check---pull the cover off the top of the bolster to see what is going on with the worm & sector gear. If the nut holding the sector gear down on the splined bolster shaft is loose, try tightening it. Remove key first. Worm & gear can be inspected also.

Get someone to sit on the seat and move the steering wheel while you check it out. Start at the two collars on the pedestal they must be flush and tight. Then work your way down the shaft, gears, bushing, rod ends and look for the looseness. Do you have an operators manual. Easy to get.
