Delco Distributor

I have an IH 544 with a Delco Remy 1112697 distributor (cap held on by screws). The tractor started fine but would sometimes stop after a couple hours but could be restarted, so the Case dealer recommended a tune up. I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor.

After the tune up, the tractor will only start if I use the old somewhat corroded and cracked distributer cap, but not the new one (have tried 2 new ones from the Case dealer). With the new cap, it sounds like a spark is only going to 1 cylinder when I try to start it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Coil wire in the central nipple? rotor in? Points gapped on the high side of the lobe? Play in the dist bushing?

Are you getting part number 1960833 cap. There are two distributors with screw down caps for that engine. Another distributor has clips. One with screws is for points and other is for electronic. The 544 catalog does not show engine parts so one has to go to the C-200 engine manual and that might be the problem. Wrong cap.

I will check those things, especially the point gap. It's just weird that it works with the old cap, but it may be the corrosion making up for that.

Thanks for the responses.

The other cap number is 801064 which is a Delco part number but listed in IH parts book. The number you have should be the correct one for your distributor unless they have mixed them up in parts distribution. Never know.
