966 slight miss?

I got the old 966 fired up today for the second time this year. Noticed that it sometimes had a slight miss. It didn't seem consistent just random and not bad either. It's been years since this thing has really had a load on it. Mostly PTO auger work and some raking. Will this clear up? Is it a symptom of sitting so long? Or is this a major deal? Otherwise it really runs good and always has. Has 5000 hours on it. Original.

I don"t think you"ll be able to tell until you"ve run it for a while with a load on it.

All the diesels I have run better after they"ve done a little work.

That's what I was thinking too. It could sure use a good workout. Got an old 5 shank ripper maybe I should hook it up and go tear up some ends and see if that helps

DK44H, AN IH D-414 is not an engine that does well on light loads! Idling around not really working. They are happiest at Wide Open under a heavy load Screaming at the Top of their Lungs really turning out work! So go do a days work with her (plowing, Chiseling) and see if she don;t straighten out Also they Tend to slobber oil out the exhaust too. When they have been run idling around on light duty. Get her to Full Operating Temp and hold it for a few hrs.!
IMO, I think it will Clear up after it had done some real work, not light duty kind of work. This is more of a system of Inactivity, No sustained temperature for long times, causing seals to seals to leak, carbon not to get burnt off the tips of the Injectors, Valves etc, etc, etc.
My 74, 966 is this way!
Hope this helps

how old is the fule and the temp I just rebuilt my chalmers 190 xt and it sat for 5 years doing nothing and of course it had a full tank when it died and it doesnt care for it much

The fuel is surely over a year old. I couldn't tell you the last time and valve adjustments had been made. As soon as it gets cold here and I get that cab tore off I will check all those things. It's hard to work in the shop much when it's 60 degrees in December!

Well, with out standing next to it and hearing it for myself . (1) change the oil and do a new filter change (all OF THEM ) (2) dump some Lucas fuel conditioner in it and take it out and work her. Then see what ya have . Then i would then remove the hoods and do a valve adjustment BY THE BOOK and you do not have to pull the cab to do this.

Thanks vet this is my winter project so I will definitely change all filters, oil, fuel, and air. Cab is coming off anyhow tho. Love them 66s with an open station. If we woulda just kept the 966 hydro, I wouldn't have to yank this one.

While I got your attention vet, is there any way to install a muffler under the hood and still come out the stock hole with a straight pipe to give it a little meaner look? Figured if anyone knew you would. Thanks

If you chop off the front overhang of the fuel tank a 986 muffler would fit right in there.
