Hydraulic Hose Configuration/Connection

I have a 1948 Farmall M with the LiftAll accessory. I need assistance concerning how to configure or connect the hydraulic hose(s) from the liftall to a single hydraulic cylindar on a towed John Deere #55 plow. The problem I am having is that using only one hose from the liftall to the cylindar allows me to lift the plow but, I have to rely on gravity to drop the plow. In this configuration, I cannot quite get the plow to "dig in" when plowing. When I connect two hoses to the lift all (using A&B ports on the liftall), I cannot lift or lower the plow very well. The cylindar on the plow is a 3x8 off-the-shelf type item and not the cylindar that JD apparently had as original equipment on the plow. Any assistance would be appreciated.

The way you have it configured with just ONE hose is exactly how it is supposed to work. Maybe you are not shoving that hydraulic lift control rod quite far enough forward? Or maybe there is a problem with how the plow is set?
 
There is no down pressure on that system. In order to get down pressure you have to put a 2 way valve between the liftall and the cylinder. Then a return line back to tractor supply tank at bottom or top of pump.

You have a plow problem, not a hydraulic problem. Many plows were used before hydraulics were common or an option, they have gravity drop. The plow needs to float anyway,
 
Gotta ask, not trying to be funny. Do you have a proper vent in the other port of the cylinder?
 
I plowed many acres with a Farmall MD and a JD 55 plow with a singe acting 8x3 cylinder. I did have a vent in the 2nd port of the cylinder. In hard ground, you many need to put some weight on the plow and/or replace the shares if the plow don't want to go in. You would have the same problem with a double acting cylinder as you can't put down pressure on that plow. I have about a 140 #wheel weight on this plow. My JD 4-bottom 66 plow did what you said this year until I put new shares on it and moved the wheel weight to it. And I run that plow with a double acting cylinder. Al

I will add that unless the shares,are sharp and the leading edge is not rounded underneath, putting 2 way on it will just make a really unruly scar making trailer. Jim

On my neighbors M we put a T in the filler and ran a hose to a hydraulic quick connect in back. That way it will vent properly, stay clean, and not get damaged.
 
You only use one port and one hose for a single way cycl.You have to add a cifferent valve assy on the tractor to get two-way. Are your points sharp and pointed down some. You can weld some material on the point to give them some 'SUCK' old timers would heat them in a forge and pound them out and down some then sharpen the rest of the share.We had a good one in our area. He even replaced a point i broke off by fusing some metal back that point never idid wear very much so whatever he used was some pretty good stuff. Setting the plow and the hitch is also important for draft ect. Having the rolling cutters and joiners is also important. Nowdays people say whats a jouner and i tell them you have just told me your age.
 
I want to thank all of you for the information/advice. I now know how to resolve the problem. As to the vent---the one I had on the cylindar was defective even though it was new. Again, thanks.
