300 rear main seal?

How hard is it to put a rear main seal in a Farmall 300? What all do I need? What do I need to look for? Local dealer said it would be about $800.00. I can not afford that on my small retirement!

The seal is cheap but the tractor has to be split and the flywheel removed. Splitting is fairly easy if you have a way to support and roll either the front or rear. I have splitting stands I had made for about $200 to roll the front.
 
and splitting the tractor opens up a "may as well." Since the labor is more involved, you may as well replace the clutch, may as well replace the IPTO shaft, may as well replace the TA...etc. Some places will sell you all the jobs whether it needs it or not (most are at least honest enough to actually put the parts in they said they sold you). Other places will do as little as you request whether something else truly needs attention or not, and others will inspect the other parts and communicate with you what really needs to be done and work out a plan with you.

If you don"t know the repair history, you may be in for some surprises--done at a shop, 800 becomes 1600 easily. If you chose to tackle this yourself, find a mechanical minded friend with some experience to help you inspect those other parts that are easy to change once you are in there.

You may just want to hold off if money is an issue. It is very easy to add $$$$ once you tear something apart.

I would agree with the others and replace the transmission input seal and clutch while it is apart. Splitting those tractors without stands is dangerous. The front gets real top heavy when you unbolt it.
 
Package with the rear main and all the gaskets for the retainers is $11.49 and oil pan gasket $8.49 at NAPA. Going to loose some, not much hydraulic fluid when the hydraulic line is diconnected to split. If you were near me I would be glad to do it for $800 if thats all that was replaced.
