I"ve decided to change the trans/diff sludge. It is a thick brown goo. My plan is to add several gallons of diesel and run it around the place a little bit and drop the drain plug and put in new oil. See any problems with this ?

I"d put a gallon or so of cheap oil in with the diesel just to be sure there is something there to provide at least some lubrication.

Put a space heater on it to get the rearend hot and it will drain . Probably 140 weight and in this weather it is a weeeeee bit stiff.

For 10 minutes of no load cleaning, no oil is needed (the residual will do fine) if you feel unsure, jack it up and run it W/O even weight. Jim

If your fill cap is large enough, I have taken a boat bilge pump and placed it in a catch container (bucket). Stick the hose in the fill and let it run with diesel flowing. I gave mine 10 minutes and it was cleared out of all the junk. Then I filled it with a mix of diesel and oil to get the rest cleared.

I pulled the transmission cover plate off and drained everything then scraped the goo out with a 2" wood slat. I/m glad I did, the sludge was so congealed and heavy I don"t think it would have ever thinned out and drained.
