806 fenders

The early ones had round fenders and the later ones had flattops. I'm not sure when they changed. I have seen some 64 models with flattops, but don't know if they were original.

An early tractor would have "clamshells".If you're looking at a wheatland (International),it will have 'crown' fenders.

Flat top fender were not available for the Farmall 806 untill the Farmall 1206 was inroduced.

No fenders were standard on the Farmall 806. Early Farmall 806's had the clamshell fenders as an option and later, after the 1206 was introduced, had either the clamshell or the flatop fenders as an option. The International 806's were standard with the large crown or full coverage fenders. Almost all Farmall 806's sold in our area were sold without fenders.

Flat tops were Option as My old boss bought one of the first 806's in sept. of 63 and his had flat tops and a week later my uncle bought one and it had flat tops. Inow have a 1964 806 and it has flattops .

Really i cant imagine ordering a tractor without fenders. Back then it must have been at least a 200 dollar option. Why not spend the 200 and get fenders .It would be worth more in the end.

When aftermarket cabs were introduced many sets of fenders were scrapped .Now a good set of fenders sell at premium prices if you can find them. The after market ones have gotten better but some people would rather they be original IH.

I"m not sure where you are getting your information but you are a little off base. My grandfather bought an 806 right after they came out and it had flat tops. Flat top fenders were always an option. The 1206 didn"t come out until 1965 and by that time there were thousands of 806"s and 706"s running around with flat top fenders. I don"t know what part of the country you live in but around here I never knew of an 806 ordered or delivered without fenders. Think about it. Why would anyone want to ride a tractor that size with big tires without the protection of fenders? Even the tractors that had cabs added were ordered with fenders. The fenders either stayed on or went in a corner of the barn. I may be wrong but I don"t believe no fenders was standard. I think round fenders were probably standard and the deluxe flat tops were probably on option.

Here in my part of the world I know of 6 806's bought new.

Ours and 2 neighbors had no fenders from the factory. They were in the way for the mounted corn pickers.

Two had round top fenders and one had flat top.

The one that had flat top also had a 706 for the picker with no fenders from the factory.

Only one of those 7 tractors came with a wide front.

(quoted from post at 13:13:10 12/02/12) Really i cant imagine ordering a tractor without fenders. Back then it must have been at least a 200 dollar option. Why not spend the 200 and get fenders .It would be worth more in the end.

$200 was a LOT of money for something that absolutely was not needed. Fenders, wide front axles, and cabs did not increase the usefulness of the tractor one little bit.

In my area we had at least ten 06 tractors within 15 miles with pickers on them and to my knowledge none of them came without fenders. When the picker went on you took the fenders off and when the picker came back off you put the fenders on. Pretty simple really. I guess if the tractors were used for nothing but picking corn I could see ordering them without fenders. The guys in this area however tended to use their tractors for a lot of other things the other ten months out of the year. Keep in mind there was a lot of livestock around at that time which meant manure handling. Kind of nice to have fenders for that. I really can't imagine doing much fieldwork with an 806 or 706 without some kind of fenders. Maybe its just me.

It's my understanding that in some states, Michigan being one of them, all tractors had to be sold with fenders.

My '64 806 came with Clamshells. I currently have a cab on it, so the fenders are in the barn. -Andy

i have a 1206 fender delete tractor. it has a flashing lite mounted on a rod and sticking out over the wheel, many of the tractors in the south do not have fenders. Have an uncle that bought a 656 fender delete.

Other than maybe keeping a little dust off you the fenders did little for field work.

Ran for 4 years without fenders on the 806 and 856 doing field work. Never new better I guess.

966 in 74 was the first tractor we bought with a wide front and fenders.

Baelee,

I was selling new IH at that time and I stick by my statement that the flat tops were not available on the 806 untill the same time as the 1206 was introcduced. Look at all of the early Farmall 806 literature. They either show no fenders or the optional clamshell fenders.
