new to this sight. have a H, i think? only # i can find is 8638 D E on left/side back by tran"s need to know if this a good #.what yr. and if it is a H. THANK"S FOR THE HELP.

That number is a casting code for the part. The tractor serial is on a plate on the left side of the clutch housing and on the engine block on the right side just below the spark plugs.

A or a B tractor.B if narrow front. Serial may be on the seat support. Lot of serial number tags are missing. Some tractors used the same engine serial number as the chassis. Up to a serial number break.

If it"s an H the serial number plate will start with "FBH". But on my 1950 H the same number is stamped onto a flat area 2 inches below the number 1 spark plug.

Sounds like you're in the dark so probably should explain more. Cast # 6342DH is the engine block for a farmall model A or B tractor. # 8638DE is the casting # for a center housing used on both the above tractors.
Most of the B tractors have the engine serial # and chassis # the same if original. Up to serial # 201,000 did. Engine number is stamped in the engine block on a flat surface high on the block, right side. Guessing its a model B since you think it may be a H tractor.
